ARE THERE HIDDEN CHAMBERS IN THE TOMB OF KING TUT? WILL ONE OF ARCHAEOLOGY’S BIGGEST MYSTERIES BE SOLVED IN 2016?
Dr. Nicholas Reeves, an Egyptologist and one of the foremost experts on the Valley of the Kings, recently made worldwide headlines due to his search for hidden chambers within the tomb of Tutankhamun and his arguments that these long forgotten rooms may contain the burial of Queen Nefertiti.
To discuss his theories, Dr. Reeves will be visiting The Discovery of King Tut exhibition in New York for an exclusive gallery talk at 1pm, on Monday, January 18th, 2016 – Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.
The talk will be hosted by Don Wildman, the renowned presenter of the Travel Channel shows “Mysteries at the Museum,” “Monumental Mysteries” and “Greatest Mysteries,” as well as many other documentaries on various channels. For fans of Egyptology, this will be a unique chance to meet both Dr. Nicholas Reeves and Don Wildman.
Using recently published surface scans of the decorated burial chamber of Tutankhamun’s tomb (KV 62) – created using the latest laser measuring technology by Madrid conservation specialists Factum Arte – Dr. Reeves discovered structures in the chamber’s north and west walls, concealed behind heavily painted scenes, that he identified as areas that had been walled-in in ancient times.
Dr. Reeves says, “What now stand starkly revealed are the outlines of previously unsuspected doorways, signalling the existence of a wholly unknown storage chamber of Tutankhamun on the Burial Chamber’s west, and on the decorated north a significant continuation of the tomb’s plan. More extraordinary still is the possibility that within this corridor continuation may lie yet another burial, completely unexplored – a tomb belonging to the most beautiful, celebrated, and long-sought woman of the ancient world: Nefertiti. In a mere six months this revolutionary hypothesis has captured the imagination not only of Egyptology, but of the entire world. And as the work has proceeded more and more evidence in its support has been encountered. The gallery talk will take place on Monday January 18th, 2016, at 1pm in the Burton Gallery at The Discovery of King Tut, Premier Exhibitions at 417 Fifth Ave. The talk is free for exhibition ticket holders (entrance fee on 18th January will be $15). The talk will last about 40 minutes and will be followed by a Q&A.
